To James, With Love

The bassinet is ready, the hospital bag is packed, countless lists have been made... everything's all set and ready for our little baby girl's arrival!

One final preparation was this gift to James from his new sister. I read that it's a good idea to get an older sibling a special gift from the new one - I suppose so they get off on the right foot. :) Ha!

I was inspired by this idea from Ms. Martha Stewart to put together a little package of goodies. In one of my handmade gift bags I included some of James' favorite things: a disposable camera (he loves taking pictures and I thought it'd be cute for him to take some of his new sister), a mini homemade notebook with a tiny pencil (he's really into writing "notes" lately), some fun bugs, a small container of gummy bears, a wrapped gift (dollar store binoculars), and a special homemade card.

I'm bringing the gift to the hospital with me and we'll give it to James when he meets his sister. I can't wait to see my two loves together for the first time!

  2. Brilliant and thoughtful idea. I wish we would have thought of this when our second was born. My older son did go and pick out a special stuffy for his baby brother, right before he was born, and he brought it to the hospital for him.

  14. We did the same thing, and also had Maggie pick out a gift for her baby brother.

In addition, visitors at the hospital brought gifts for both kids, and Maggie got to open them all! She was pretty impressed.

  15. Its a really good idea! We did this with my second child and the older child was able to pick something out for her too ( I think it was a blanket she was wrapped in when he came to visit) Good luck!

  16. I did that with my son and also had one waiting at home. I also took Hunter with me before the baby was born for him to pick out a gift for her. Surprisingly he really liked the picking out part and giving it to her part as well. I am really glad I took the time to do this. It really helped his insecurity in a major life changing time for him.

  17. This is really lovely. It's part of Turkish culture too for the baby to bring a gift to the older siblings.

  19. Love it!!!! Emma "brought" Jeremy a new train when she was born in an effort to appease Big Brother. I think it worked. In any case, it momentarily distracted him from the fact that Mommy was in the hospital. :-) I love the personalization of James' gift though. You insanely rock!!

  21. Good luck with everything. We just had a little boy in July and he "brought" his big brother a present too. It went very well. The bunch of his favorite things sounds really nice too.
