In honor of our weather theme this month, James and I made a rainbow rainstick using this tutorial. It was such a fun craft and since the weather outside was warm and sunny, we took it all outside!
First we hammered lots of nails into the cardboard mailing tube. This was James' favorite part, though he got bored with hammering about halfway through. :)
Next we filled the tube with river stones and rice.
The inside of the tube looks a little scary - watch those fingers!

Then we we decorated the tube with all sorts of colorful goodies.The rainstick makes such a beautiful sound and will be a welcome addition to our classroom instrument basket!

You can tell that James is so excited to make his rainbow stick! It's a great idea. I make a similar one but with baby class (18 months - 3 years) nails and hammers are a no no. So we use empty clear 500ml drink bottles, let them put beads and assorted beans (red, green, yellow) popcorn and rice into them. I get the children to roll up balls of crepe paper and drop them into their bottles. We glue and tape the caps onto the bottles so the children cannot open them. Also you can use shiny pieces, glitter, bells ... anything that is bright and colorful. My baby class LOVES them! We also use them to play 'spin the bottle' :-)

Very cool James! L made one last year but we didn't think to add the nails! It's so nice to see you guys in the sun with shorts on, we have sooo much rain here that the last thing we need right now is a rain stick! LOL

I saw that tutorial a little while ago (hah, i just read another comment - probably saw that turotial via you after all!) and thought I definitely want to make one of those. Still have to go out for the mailing tube though:) James did a beautiful job. Love the rainbow.

We loved making our rain stick. It's also fun to experiment with the different sized fillings and hear the difference in sound. Such a great activity!
