On Our Bookcase

Here are our picks for next week:

With Thanksgiving right around the corner we are of course reading several books about the holiday. This book, A Plump and Perky Turkey, by Teresa Bateman, gave me a chuckle as I read it for the first time the other day. I don't usually like books that make light of killing animals - even if it is for the purpose of survival (or, in this case, a Thanksgiving feast), but *spoiler alert* the turkey gets away in the end. That's what made me chuckle. :) It's a colorful book with a nice, rhyming text. James really seemed to enjoy it.

My other Thanksgiving pick is This First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Story, by Laura Krauss Melmed. I really like this book because it incorporates counting into the story. Always a bonus when you can add extra learning elements!

I was so excited to find this book, First ABC, by Jo Litchfield. The letters and pictures in the book are printed with a smooth, waxy type of print that contrasts with texture of the background. It allows the child to "feel" the letters when they trace them. This simulates the Montessori sandpaper letters I've been wanting to get for James. Also, the pictures doesn't show this, but the book has large rounded tabs all along the top and right side of the book, making it easy for little hands to find certain letters.

This is one of James' favorite books: Paddington's Opposites, by Michael Bond. It's a simple paperback book filled with, you guessed it, opposites. Each page has one picture and one word, which makes it easy for little ones to read. James loves reading this book by himself. :)

We tried so hard to find more books about Thanksgiving, our library just didn't have much to choose from.

I would love to check out the book on opposites.

The ABC book sounds great! I wish our library had more Usborne books - they are all so good! Thanks for sharing your picks!

Thanks for linking up. I love Usborne books too - they are very special. We have several of them at home, and Anna loves all of them.
